Nippy Bus is committed to making our scheduled services accessible to as many people as possible. The majority of our routes, with the exception of demand responsive services and those services that mainly serve educational establishments, are served by low floor buses. For operational reasons we may sometimes have to substitute a non-accessible vehicle temporarily on a route that is normally served by low floor buses. As we cannot guarantee that a service is being run today with a low floor vehicle, wheel chair users or other passengers that require low floor access should telephone the transport office on 01935 823888 to confirm their journey plans.
Whist our services are fully accessible to wheelchairs, both manual and powered that conform to the standard reference size, there is no legal requirement for operators to carry mobility scooters.
Due to the range and sizes of mobility scooters available it is not practical for a driver to assess a scooters suitability for carriage at the roadside. To reduce the scope for ‘on the bus’ disagreement and disputes the Confederation of Passenger Transport and Department of Transport have jointly developed a code designed to be the industry standard for the carriage of mobility scooters on scheduled services. A copy of the code can be viewed here
The code requires users of mobility scooters to obtain prior approval of operators and obtain a ‘permit for travel’ prior to their scooter being carried on any bus. Mobility scooter users must be assessed and receive on-bus training from the operator before travelling on the bus for the first time.
Nippy Bus has not signed up to the CPT scheme. However, we are more than happy to welcome permit holders issued by bus companies who are part of the CPT scheme on to all of our services.
A list of bus operating companies that offer training and issue permits can be found here
